Tea was first brought from china to britain in 1670s as a medicinal herb, and was slow to become an popular drink . it was only when it was sweetened with sugar that it began to appeal british taste.
It became so popular that by 1974 britain was buying 9 million pounds. The big problem for britain was that china china would sell tea only for silver, large amount of silver and so was leaving the country.
To balance the act east india cmpany behgan to smuggle opium into china for which they would demand silver for.this thing was fiercely resisted by chinese leaading to britain declaring war in 1840 to force china to buy drugs.
